--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dole Fresh Fruit:

WHAT:

Latrobe, Pa. and Dole Fresh Fruit host the world’s largest banana gathering and banana split bar on Aug. 25, National Banana Split Day. Thousands are expected at today’s free party at Latrobe’s St. Vincent College which caps a three-day celebration honoring the designation of Latrobe by Pa. as the official birthplace of the dessert.

In keeping with its nutritional mission, Dole will offer healthier versions of the dessert with less calories and fat.

THE AUG. 25 EVENT (4PM) IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

HISTORY:

David Strickler, a 23-year-old pharmacist at Latrobe’s Tassel Pharmacy, invented the banana split in 1904. The claim outdates a 1907 dessert-creation claim by Wilmington, Ohio.
