Recently, Pilney came across an article in the Denver Post, which discussed some of his favorite titles he had the opportunity to see over the summer. "The Denver Post named their top picks of best small movies of summer 2013, and I have to agree with all of them," Michael Pilney admitted.
The two top picks during the summer of 2013 were Blue Jasmine and Fruitvale Station. Every summer, however, parades out multiple popular titles, especially when it comes to independent films. Last year, for example, Moonrise Kingdom and Beasts of the Southern Wild proved incredibly popular, both winning multiple honors and awards.
"Summer remains as the film industry's most popular season," said Pilney. "So, one can always expect a few award-winning titles to be released from the course of June until August."
Blue Jasmine directed by the notorious Woody Allen, "may prove to be the director's biggest-grossing film," said Charlie McCollum, writer for the Denver Post. Fruitvale Station has made an impressive profit of about $15 million since it was recently released.
Some of the other titles mentioned in the article that did not receive as much attention, but should have according to Pilney, include Frances Ha, The Way, Way Back, The Spectacular Now, and In a World... Some of these films are still in theaters, while others are now available for rent and purchase online or on DVD. Pilney encourages his readers to become adventurous when it comes to seeing films and pleads with them to go see movies that they would not necessarily venture to on their own accord.
"Every season there are always movies that go unnoticed. That doesn't mean they are not good. In fact, there are many movies that I have seen that have received little coverage and absolutely blow me away. That's the beauty of my job, I never really know what to expect," said Pilney.
Pilney admits that he is disappointed that summer is over but is hopeful for a few anticipated releases this fall and winter. He is also thrilled to start reading some new books that authors have sent him recently. "I'm always excited for the media waiting for me around the corner. I typically see at least seven to ten movies per week. Some may think that's a bit extreme and many of my friends refer to me as a film geek, but that's okay. I genuinely love what I do and being able to share my passion with my readers is just icing on the cake," Michael Pilney added.
