Thankfully, a recent article by the New York Times reports that not only did manufacturing in the United States jump back up in August, it actually kept on surging upward thanks in large part to the automotive industry.
According to the article, automobile manufacturing in the month of August reached the highest levels that they have seen in six years, which went a long way toward returning hope to the economy. And while another report noted a slight slowdown in manufacturing factory activity during this same month, increased shipments and orders all point toward a marked increase in actual production.
Economists are now predicting that the manufacturing sector will pick up in terms of growth and move even faster over the remainder of 2013, says the article. Although the Institute for Supply Management reported that solid gains had been missing in factory output, the Federal Reserve reported that overall industrial production raised by 0.4 percent in August, with manufacturing production in particular increasing by 0.7 percent.

"The economy has only recently begun to get over the rough patches that it's seen, and to see manufacturing stumble so soon afterward was disconcerting. According to the article, a survey conducted by the Federal Reserve showed that the index of six-month business conditions has improved to one-and-a-half-year highs in September alone. This improvement that industrial output saw last month points to a degree of underlying momentum in factory activity, the article continues. This momentum is supportive of many economic forecasts that predicted only a slight slowdown in economic growth throughout the current business quarter.
