CHICAGO, IL, September 27, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Personal injury attorney Thomas G. Gorman, of Schiff Gorman LLC, has reached a settlement in a wrong-site surgery case (Case Number: 2011-L-10725) filed against a Chicago area surgeon and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The victim, a 54-year-old woman, was diagnosed with a herniated disc on the lower half of her spine, known as the L5-S1 disc. She went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital to undergo a surgical treatment called a discectomy, in which the bulging material around the disc is removed. In addition, she was scheduled for a laminotomy, which is another surgical procedure used to remove a small portion of the bone covering the spinal nerve. The procedures were to take place on the right side of the disk.

An apparent lack of adherence to a national surgical safety protocol contributed to the decision of the surgeon to operate on the left side instead of the right. The victim sought Mr. Gorman's assistance in pursuing compensation for the constant pain she has experienced since the surgery, which is on her left side.

Mr. Gorman says," The result in this case raises the awareness of the incidents of wrong-site surgery and the easy, inexpensive remedies hospitals can employ to avoid such occurrences."

The terms of the medical malpractice settlement were not disclosed.
