September 28, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Safety concerns over defective airbags have triggered recalls affecting hundreds of thousands of vehicles in the United States and overseas. Both Honda and Suzuki issued widespread recalls in September 2013 due to defective airbag systems that could cause the airbags to deploy improperly, with the potential for serious injury.

Suzuki recall

The Suzuki recall affects nearly 200,000 vehicles in the U.S. and applies to the following models:- Grand Vitara SUV (model years 2006 to 2011).- SX4 (model years 2007 to 2011).

Suzuki is recalling the vehicles because of defects in the front passenger seat airbag sensors, which could fail and cause a vehicle's airbag to deploy in a crash regardless of whether the seat is occupied by a child or by an adult. Because children can be seriously injured by the force of deploying airbag, the devices are designed to deploy only if someone of adequate size is seated in the front seat.

Another concern is that the same faulty sensor could also prevent the airbags from deploying even if the seat is occupied by an adult. This could greatly increase the risk injury or death in the event of a crash. Fortunately, however, no injuries have yet been reported in connection to the defect.

Honda recall

Honda has also announced a recall of approximately 342,000 vehicles due to faulty airbag systems. The Honda recall affects the following vehicles:- Odyssey (model years 2003 and 2004).- Acura MDX (model year 2003).

Honda recalled the vehicles due to a defect that could cause the airbags in the driver and passenger seats to deploy inadvertently. This has the potential to cause serious injury to drivers and passengers who are struck by an improperly deployed airbag, and may also increase the risk of traffic accidents due to unexpected deployment. According to a Honda representative, there have been several reports of hand injuries in connection to the issue, Reuters reported.
