Throughout the last two centuries, individuals and organizations have dedicated their time to breeding German Shepherds and learning all they can about the breed. These breeders are dedicated to recording their findings and improving the breed through their efforts. Joshua Lundberg recently interacted with a group of German Shepherd experts when they encountered the Monks of New Skeete.
The Monks of New Skeete are the residents of a small monastery in Cambridge, New York who are renowned for their work with German Shepherds. Over the last fifty years, the Monks of New Skeete have developed a variety of training methods aimed specifically at large dogs and have written multiple volumes on training and raising German Shepherds. Outside of their focus on dog training, the Monks of New Skeete have engaged in a variety of community service efforts and have endeared themselves to the surrounding city.
Joshua Lundberg and his family have raised German Shepherds for as long as he can remember. As they refined their techniques for training their dogs, they found the methods of the Monks of New Skeete to be essential and adopted many of them. Joshua Lundberg and his family were contacted by the Monks shortly afterwards to enroll their dogs in a breeding program with the monastery's dogs. While involved with the program, Joshua Lundberg worked to help socialize puppies, assisting in delivering the puppies, monitoring their weights, keeping their area clean, and taking them into the world and getting them used to the sights and sounds of modern society.
Joshua Lundberg is proud of the work he has put into the socialization program, and was happy to share a tip or two regarding raising dogs.
1. Be Patient: Raising puppies is a long, drawn out process. Remember that when you are training a puppy, it is like raising a baby. You can't expect a puppy to remember everything the first, second, or hundredth time that you teach it to them. Patience is key for dog trainers like Joshua Lundberg.2. Be the Boss: While patience is important, the fact of the matter is that dogs are a pack-based species. Because of this, they are naturally geared to find and follow a pack leader that provides stable, consistent leadership in their lives. Joshua Lundberg encourages new puppy owners to make sure that they become the pack leader early on. This will help new owners avoid disobedient and dominant dogs later on.
