"As the father of a Cub Scout, I wanted to design a program that revolved around racing, karting and STEM. When I was a kid, I did not know how many engineering opportunities were available in the racing world. We are always looking for young engineers on our race teams," said Mike Johnson, owner, Pole Position Raceway St. Louis and championship winning race team manager. "I want to introduce the world of racing and karting to kids and families alike and show some real world relevance between science, technology and racing. Some of the tools that kids learn at our program can be used almost directly once they get on the track."
Nova Awards were designed to spark interest in STEM and have a reward of the Nova patch and pins. This STEM program helps Scouts fulfill requirements towards the Tech Talk Nova Award and the 1-2-3 Go! Nova Award. After completing the workshop, Scouts will receive a certificate of completion and a free Junior Membership to Pole Position Raceway St. Louis, granting them a free race during their birthday month.
"Pole Position Raceway is providing a unique STEM based program for local Cub Scouts," said Tom Kroenung, Greater St. Louis Area Council STEM program director. "Programs like this engage our youth members in STEM in a way that is fun and interesting to them. I am looking forward to seeing this program in action."
This new STEM program kicks off Oct. 12, 2013 from 9 am to 10:30 am at Pole Position Raceway St. Louis. Workshops will be offered every other Saturday, Oct. through Dec. and are free to all Scouts. There is a maximum of 36 Scouts per each scheduled workshop. Individual and group registration is available online.
