According to a recent article from The Huffington Post, "Disney Animation vets Aaron Blaise and Chuck Williams are raising funds for an animated picture in which people jump into famous works of art...Blaise and Williams worked on classics like the Lion King, Pocahontas and Mulan before embarking on this independent project. According to the Kickstarter description, Art Story follows a straight-laced, Michael Cera-esque protagonist and his wacky Christopher Lloyd-like grandfather on their misadventure through a slew of art history's greatest hits. The two struggle to get along as they journey through the painted worlds of Degas, Lichtenstein, Rousseau and more."
Kurt Criter responds, "This is an ingenious idea that has limitless potential. What is most interesting is that it presents art history to children in a way that is not boring, but inspiring. Even more importantly, it seems like a film that appreciates art in such a way that adults can also enjoy the story. If successful, Art Story could introduce the creative power to young viewers and encourage older ones to revisit the concept."
Although the film's connection to Disney animators has been a major draw for the project, Kurt Criter notes that its funding is incredibly unique--both the spirit behind the film and the culture of its potential viewers. Already surpassing its funding goal of $350,000 on crowdfunding site Kickstarter, Art Story is showing America that people can play an active role in making entertainment visions come to life.
"Although Art Story has some major talent attached to it, I believe the most incredible thing about this project are the sweeping donations that came from the American public. Having amassed such a large collection of funds through crowdfunding, Art Story has made it clear that Americans are interested in art and art history and would like to see such creativity come alive to inspire and captive young minds," Kurt Criter concludes.
