Episodic memory links autobiographical memories with places, yet just how the brain keeps these memories from being mixed up, and how much capacity the brain has to store these memories, has posed an intriguing puzzle for neuroscientists. Researchers led by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology have conducted an ingenious experiment with laboratory rats that shows how neurons fire in such a way as to minimize interference between memories while maximizing the number of experiences that can be stored in the same network.
