Endless Energy - 4 Tips for Keeping up with the Grandkids

The great thing about being a grandparent is that you get all the fun of having children again, but without all those parental responsibilities. The downside is that you're probably reaching the point in life where your body is starting to slow down.

While aging is nothing to be ashamed of, it's definitely something you want to delay as long as possible. There's still plenty of life to live, great times to be had with family, and misadventures and mischief to get up to with the grandkids. So how do you keep up with them and maintain the lifestyle you deserve? We’ve got you covered.

Keep an eye on things

The reason people always are always saying “prevention is the best cure” is that, while it may sound annoyingly trite, it's true. You can't necessarily stop your body from changing, but you can do your best to make sure it doesn't degrade. If your issues are more general in nature, or you're just starting to feel the toll of a life well lived, consider participating in aged care physiotherapy.

If your issues are more specific, however, remember that many chronic problems are preventable if we take the right steps early on and get regular check-ups with the doctor. Complex issues can require multiple specialists, and the most important thing to do at this stage in life is to listen to your body. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.

Go green

You may feel like you've earnt the right to relax at this point, and while you certainly have, your body will thank you if you don't take this idea too far. A balanced lifestyle has its name because that's precisely what it is: balanced. You're never going to receive the benefits of having one if you blatantly ignore all of the basic rules.

If you've let yourself go over recent years, start putting a little more effort into eating right and working out. You'd be surprised how much of a difference it will make. Not only will it become far easier to keep up with the grandkids when they're racing around at a million miles an hour, but you can also feel good about the fact that you're providing them with a healthy role model.

Body, mind, and soul

Speaking of feeling good, chances are that if you're off-center mentally or emotionally, you're going to feel it physically. Make sure you still take the time to look after your mental health and do things that make you truly happy, no matter how illogical they may seem. Whether it's golfing, gardening or going for 10km runs, choose hobbies that make you feel happy and full of life.

Latest may truly be greatest

Last but not least, spend some time figuring out how to use some of the new technologies that are native to the youngest generation. You’ll find many of the latest tech advances to be super helpful at making day-to-day tasks quicker and easier, and tackling them will also help keep your mind sharp as humans are designed for constant learning. If this isn't enough incentive, think of all the ways being able to use the same devices as your grandkids could help you bond.

You've lived, laughed, and worked hard to get to where you are now, and you deserve to enjoy every minute of it. Plus, your grandchildren deserve the best version of you that you can be. If you take care of your body and listen to what it has to say, then you can trust it to take care of you too.
