Crime Comparisons - How Do Australia's Break-In Rates Compare Globally?

Australia, generally speaking, is regarded as a safe country, with crime levels as low as some northern European countries and having the city of Melbourne been voted as the most livable city. However, like any country, crimes do get committed, with the most common recorded crimes being burglaries and break-ins.

Australia’s number #1 crime is burglary and theft. In 2006, Australia was ranked 1st in number of burglaries recorded by police in the world. Nowadays, our burglary rates are lower than in the UK and roughly on par with the US, but more than twice as bad as countries like Germany, Spain, Japan and Sweden. The international average is roughly 1.8% of all households burgled, and our average is 2.5%. This is roughly, 1 out of every 40 houses in Australia will be burgled this year.

Compared directly to America, Australia’s crime level hits 46.01 and ranks 46th overall, whilst America rates 55.84 and is ranked 30th. In saying this, Australia ranks worse than America in burglaries, fear or crime, auto-theft, assault and rape. Plus, Australia's overall total crime victims sit at 30.1%, which is 43% more than America. However, America scores a lot higher on murders, deaths, shootings, youth crime, drug issues and serious assaults, with serious assaults being 91 times more than Australia.

Both break-ins and attempted break-ins have increased nationally in recent years, with the Northern Territory and Western Australia leading the states and territories. Not all areas in Australia are bad and some cities are worse than others. When ranked based on crime statistics, one of the worst cities to live in Australia is Townsville, which has a crime index of of 63.43. This is more than triple australia's safest cities score, which was Canberra with a score of 20. This is closely followed by Darwin, with a crime index of 63.04.

In saying this, Sydney and Melbourne are two of the safest cities in the world to live in, Ranking 7th and 9th in the world. Sydney ranks 7th in the top 10 for both infrastructure security and personal safety. However, Sydney lags behind in digital security and health security, in which it ranks 14th and 17th, respectively and Melbourne ranks 9th and has the second-safest infrastructure of the 50 cities ranked and ranks eighth in the category of personal safety.

By knowing about which cities and states are the safest, you can look online to see which suburbs and areas have the most crime so you can try and pick the safest places to live, or just be aware of what is happening around you.
