7 Low-Maintenance Yet Beautiful Plants For Your Garden

When you’re planting a new garden, it can take a lot of effort to keep it looking fresh and getting those new plants to flourish. Then there is shaping and pruning and other garden maintenance. That being the case, we’re going to feature 7 plants in this article that are not only beautiful additions to any garden but, more importantly, are low-maintenance as well.

If you don’t have the time to spend tending your garden, then these are good plant choices for you.

#1 - Banksia

Australia is home to numerous native plants and one of those is the Banksia family. There are quite a few species available and all of them are considered low-maintenance and very easy to grow and look after.

The cool thing about the Banksia plant is it’s a blooming plant, with flowers lasting for several months. It’s also a plant that tends to bloom in the cooler months of autumn and winter, so if you’re looking for colour in your garden when it’s not spring or summer, Banksia is an excellent choice.

There’s not much need for shaping or pruning and many people have used Banksia as a natural windbreak for patio areas.

#2 - Hibiscus

The Hibiscus plant has always been a popular choice for the grounds of hotels as well as local parks and gardens. It’s a plant that really thrives when planted in mass and produces a beautiful range of colourful flowers, depending on the strain of the Hibiscus plant you choose.

Hibiscus thrives in both tropical and subtropical climates and loves warm, coastal zones. These plants don’t fare well in extremely cold temperatures or regions that experience frost or snow in winter.

The most low-maintenance varieties of the Hibiscus plant are Surfrider and Apple Blossom. The Apple Blossom is a tall plant while the Surfrider is more compact and great for balconies and patios.

#3 - Crassula

A member of the succulent family, Crassula is particularly well known for being a very low-maintenance plant with natural, beautifully-shaped leaves. Come springtime, Crassula blooms with an array of attractive white flowers.

This is a good choice of low-maintenance plant for people located in hot climates, as Crassula thrives well in direct sunlight and very warm temperatures. It can even handle hot westerly winds and requires very little watering.

Generally, there is no pruning required and Crassula is a top choice as a long-term potted plant for patios and balconies. If you do plant in a pot, just ensure your Crassula gets plenty of sunlight.

#4 - Aloe

Another member of the succulent family is Aloe, one of Australia’s most useful and hardy plants. It’s extremely low-maintenance and also requires very little in the way of watering.

This spiky plant with medicinal properties enjoys hot and dry climates, pairs well in gardens with native grasses, and also fares well in environments where the garden bed is covered in pebbles.

Not only is aloe an attractive plant with useful properties, but it also flowers in autumn and winter, producing an array of colours such as red, white, yellow, and terracotta.

#5 - Coprosma

This is a popular evergreen shrub for the lazy gardener. It produces attractive, small and round green leaves that have a high-gloss. If you want a bit more colour for your garden, then there are varieties with burgundy, red and orange tones.

Coprosma is not a flowering plant, but when you choose one of the coloured varieties, it doesn’t need to flower to add pizzazz to your garden.

#6 - Acacia

A part of the wattle family, Acacia is an extremely low-maintenance plant variety that can endure periods of long drought; something that is a common occurrence in areas of the country.

The Golden Wattle produces flowers in bright yellow with a very sweet scent. It’s a fantastic addition to any garden, but not recommended for people with allergies.

#7 - Correa

This plant is super easy to grow and is mainly found on Australia’s east coast. The pink, bell-shaped flowers attract birds due to being rich in nectar.

Correa thrives best in either full sunlight or light shade. If you don’t have much time to tend to your garden, but want beautiful flowering plants, Correa is an excellent choice.

The Wrap

Everyone can have a fantastic looking garden filled with vibrant colours, without the need to spend hours every week maintaining it. Choose the right plants and your yard will be filled with colour all year round.
