Hills Plumber Explains How to Clear a Blocked Drain

A clogged drain can be a real pain in the neck in the home and often causes a lot of inconveniences. Besides the embarrassing and offensive smell it creates, it can also damage the home when an overflow occurs due to a blocked drain.

This is why early identification and learning how to fix your clogged drain even before it occurs is always handy. Here are some ways to identify a blocked drain:

● A persistent offensive smell.

● Slow draining of water and gurgling sounds as it is being drained.

● Overflow of wastewater into the home.

How to Clear a Blocked Drain

You can easily clear your blocked drain yourself using any of the following methods if the materials causing the drainage are identified. Some of the common materials that cause a blockage include cooking oil, mineral build-up from the water, hair, food waste, toiletries, and even tree roots.

Here are five ways to unclog your drain by yourself:

Boiling Water

This method is most often used to unclog kitchen sinks, as they are usually blocked by grease, bound food particles, and soap. Mix detergent into the water and avoid the sink seal when using boiling water to unclog your drain. The detergent serves to break down any grease in the sink that may be causing the blockage.

Using a Plunger

Plungers are more effective in clearing solid blockages than softer ones caused by grease. Plugging is often seen as messy, but if done properly, you can usually avoid the mess. To achieve the optimal result using a plunger, be sure to seal off any points of overflow using an absorbent cloth or tape before you begin to plunge the drain. Then apply pressure while making upward and downward motions to create a force that can clear the clog.

Caustic Cleaners

This is the least environmentally-friendly method of clearing a blockage, as caustic cleaners are corrosive. They are mostly used for commercial purposes and can’t be used on PVC or much older pipes. Always ensure your body is well covered when using caustic cleaners to avoid burns in case of a spill.

Natural Cleaners

This is a great alternative for caustic cleaners in the house as their components are non-toxic. White vinegar, baking soda, or a combination of both are efficient natural cleaners that dissolve grease and other soft solids.

DIY Drain Snake

You can fashion a drain snake using a coat hanger or any flexible object that can form a thin strip if the materials causing the blockage are closer to the drain opening. Create a hook at the end of the snake and insert it into the drain to dislodge and fish out the items causing the blockage.

Other methods of clearing a blocked drain, such as excavation, hydro-jet, plumber, drain snake, and pipe relining, are better handled by a plumber. This is because they require more technical knowledge to carry out effectively. You should call a licensed plumber if you’re facing a stubborn drain blockage that needs a specialised approach!
