Steps for renewal of road tax

It is mandatory for all owners of vehicles which are registered in Singapore to pay the specified road tax for their vehicle. The vehicle owner should ensure that all the road tax due is paid to the Land Transport Authority(LTA) of Singapore which is the regulatory authority for road taxes in Singapore before using the vehicle. The vehicle owner is required to pay the road tax annually or once in six months. If the road tax is not paid before the due date, a penalty will have to be paid because of the delay in renewal. Additionally, a vehicle owner who keeps or uses a vehicle for which road tax has not been paid, will have to pay a fine which may be as much as $2000.

Hence Singapore vehicle owners should ensure that they always pay the road tax due to time. The steps for renewal of road tax are described below. First the vehicle owner should ensure that the vehicle complies with all the norms specified by LTA. It is necessary to ensure that the vehicle is insured for the entire period for which the road tax has to be paid. The vehicle insurance for the car or other vehicle should include coverage for third party liability for injuries to the body and death. If the vehicle has to be inspected periodically, it should be inspected at any inspection centre, which is authorized in Singapore.

The vehicle owner should also clear pending dues if any from Singapore government agencies like the Housing and Development Board(HDB),LTA,Traffic Police(TP),Urban Redevelopment Agency(URA). If any payment of fines or fees is due, the renewal of road tax may not be completed. Some cars are registered under various schemes like weekend cars, off-peak cars, and cars for use in revised off-peak hours. These cars should have the seal of their number plate inspected at any inspection centre authorized by the LTA. Owners of heavy vehicles should also ensure that the vehicle has a valid Vehicle parking certificate(VPC).

The Automobile Association of Singapore (abbreviated as AAS) is a non-profit organization which is the representative body for vehicle owners in Singapore. The association is more than a century old and has a large number of members, who use the wide range of services it offers. For the convenience of its members owning vehicles, the vehicle owner can pay the road tax due at the offices of AAS. At present, payment for road tax is accepted at the AAS offices at GB point and 51 AMK using a cheque for the specified amount or cash.

For renewing road tax, the vehicle owner should bring the following documents

- Renewal notice for the vehicle road tax

- Original certificate for vehicle insurance, which covers the entire period for which road tax is paid.

- If applicable the original vehicle inspection certificate and or VPC for heavy vehicles.

The exact amount which has to be paid for renewal of road tax can be confirmed online by providing the age and engine capacity of the vehicle or the registration number of the vehicle.
