Changing your filter
There are two main filters in your car - the air filter and the oil filter - and these have a tendency to clog and become less effective over time. While both of these are usually replaced during a full auto service, they're fairly easy to replace yourself and you can even save some money on labor.
Check your tires
This is a very simple check that can save you a lot of trouble. You can find recommended tire pressures for front and rear tires in your car's owner's manual or on a sticker near the driver's door. There will be a different recommended pressure for your car when loaded, as it supports more weight.
You can check your tires with a tire pressure sensor - this type of sensor is usually equipped with a foot pump, so you can increase the pressure if the air pressure is low.
Battery maintenance
Have you not used your car for a long time? Most drivers know that leaving the car on the road for long periods of time can have a bad effect on the battery and can even cause the battery to drain. There are several ways to combat this. To service the battery, you can:
– Ride regularly at a reasonable speed (100 km/h).
– Buy a jumper cable or booster, in case the battery runs out and you need a jump starter.
– Invest in a trickle charger so you can recharge your car battery when needed.
Using your air conditioner
While rolling down the windows instead of turning on the air conditioner can help save fuel, your air conditioner is more likely to leak or fail otherwise used for a long time. We recommend using your air conditioner regularly - even occasionally in winter - to prevent parts of your car's cooling system from deteriorating.
Check your brakes
Before taking your vehicle in for service, you should check both the foot brake and the handbrake to make sure both are working properly. To test your brakes, drive to a remote location where you can safely stop and depart without obstacles. Practice stopping using the foot brake, while applying the brake gradually and trying to make an emergency stop.
You can test the parking brake by parking the vehicle, depressing the brake pedal, and then applying the parking brake. Then release the foot brake - if your car is stationary, your handbrake must be active.
Fill up your fluid
Finally, checking your car's fluid levels regularly can help prolong the life of your vehicle, improve its performance, and reduce maintenance bills. Before taking the car to the garage, open the hood and check the dipstick, making sure the engine oil level is somewhere between the maximum and minimum lines.
You can also refill the coolant reservoir if it seems to be running low and also check the level of your windshield washer fluid reservoir.
