Buffalo, NY- The Center for the Arts, University at Buffalo presents the Becca Stevens Band as part of the New Voices Series on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 8:00pm at the Center for the Arts’ Drama Theatre. Tickets are $26.50, Students (any school) $19.50."Great arrangements. Deeply compelling songs. Could she be the new Joni? That’s the well from which she springs." - San Jose Mercury NewsNorth Carolina-bred, New York-based singer/composer/guitarist Becca Stevens has already received copious praise from the likes of The New York Times, describing her as “a best-kept secret" and "impressively absorbing.”The Boston Phoenix noted Becca's “big voice and no-bull emotional delivery,” while The Winston-Salem Journal stated, “Stevens' singing is remarkable, soulful, pitch-perfect and subtle in its controlled acrobatics. The arrangements are exquisitely produced, and her acoustic songs boast musical textures and colors that embrace the adventurism of jazz.”In her teens, Becca studied classical guitar, and maintained an affinity for her home state’s Appalachian folk music traditions, while also developing her voice singing jazz standards with her peers and mentors in local clubs. After graduating from the high school program at the North Carolina School of the Arts with a major in classical guitar she went on to earn a BFA from New York’s The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music with high honors in vocal jazz and composition. This is where she met the musicians with whom she formed the Becca Stevens Band. The resulting music defies easy categorization, drawing upon elements of pop, jazz, or folk without limiting itself to the rules of any particular genre. Her close-knit band, which includes Liam Robinson (accordion, keyboards, vocals), Chris Tordini (upright bass, vocals) and Jordan Perlson (drums and percussion) complement Becca’s own expressive vocals and work on guitar, ukulele, and charango.Tickets: Center for the Arts Box Office (Mon-Fri 10 am-6 pm) and tickets.com.
