"Drivers who are distracted pose an immense danger to themselves, to pedestrians, and to other motorists," explains David R. Montlick, who founded Montlick & Associates. "Montlick & Associates reviews many cases involving distracted drivers, and we are passionate to do whatever we can to spread the word about these common highway dangers to help prevent injuries."
Montlick & Associates reviews the findings of the Fox Business report, beginning with the reality that there are distractions beyond those that take the driver's eyes off the road and hands off the wheel. Really, anything that takes the driver's mind off the road can be dangerous. While listening to music or to an audiobook is reported to be minimally risky, there are many other distractions that can prove extremely dangerous.
One of the riskiest things a motorist can do is to use a speech-to-text system. "Speech-to-text systems allow drivers to send texts and emails by speaking, then having the technology translate words into a written message," the article states. "Some systems also allow drivers to complete other tasks, such as updating their Facebook page." While this may seem fairly low-risk, it is actually extremely dangerous; the cognitive work required is a major distraction to the driver.
Along the same lines, according to the report, hands-free cellphone use--sometimes thought to be a safe activity for drivers--is actually just as dangerous as any other kind of cellphone use, because of the cognitive distraction that accompanies it.
This is not to say that hand-held cellphone use is off the hook, however. "For years, auto safety advocates, car insurance companies and other critics have blamed hand-held cellphones for causing significant distractions and leading to accidents and fatalities," notes Fox Business. As a result, several states have actually outlawed handheld phone use, though it remains a major problem nationwide.
Fox Business reports that even talking with another passenger can provide a moderately risky level of distraction to the driver.
"The long and the short of it is that anything that takes your brain away from the immediate task of driving--operating the motor vehicle as safely and as attentively as possible--is risky," Montlick notes. "With so many sources of distraction, it is little wonder that so many accidents are happening these days. Montlick & Associates provides high quality legal representation to those who have fallen victim to distracted drivers."
