Blake's Remanufacturing Reveals Hidden Job Opportunities

DENVER, CO, September 20, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The professionals at Blake's Remanufacturing are far from the only ones who depend upon manufacturing jobs within the United States. From unemployed factory workers looking for work to the consumers and markets that depend upon the manufacturing industry, the prevalence (or lack thereof) of viable manufacturing careers is a real concern. According to a recent article from the Washington Post, between 2000 and 2009 alone, the United States lost approximately six million manufacturing jobs.

However, says the article, a new study has recently brought to light a surprising point. Many of these jobs, says the study, may not really have gone anywhere. Instead, they may have simply been hiding in statistics.

Two economists working with the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College conducted the study in question. These two published their findings in a paper that discovered that a wealth of manufacturing jobs are still present within the country, but they are simply not being counted as manufacturing jobs. These include many positions with companies such as Apple that, despite not being classified as a manufacturer by the government, is nevertheless heavily involved in the manufacturing industry.

These companies are referred to by the study as "factory-less goods producers" that the researchers defined as any company that coordinates and designs the production of various goods, but does not have an actual onsite factory. For instance, says the news article, Apple outsources their actual manufacturing process to China, yet does almost every other aspect of their business and production within the United States.

"This is an important point to make," explains a Blake's Remanufacturing spokesperson. "After all, though the assembly lines in companies such as this may be outsourced, the actual physical assembly of a product is not the only work to be done in manufacturing. These companies still contain many design and engineering jobs that would be classified as manufacturing jobs if the company simply had a factory onsite. Although these positions may not be officially referred to as manufacturing positions, the work involved is the exact same no matter where the assembly line sits."

According to the report, this distinction could present a huge change in the previous statistics, with as many as a million or more positions that are not currently included in manufacturing reports but that are, nevertheless and for all intents and purposes, manufacturing jobs.

"Obviously this cannot account for the full impact of the manufacturing employment decline," remarks Blake's Remanufacturing, "but it does mean that the situation isn't as bad as everyone had thought."
