Towards the end of the game, they felt secure with their two goals to Mexico's zero and when the final whistle was blown, a sign of relief seemed to engulf the stadium. Although the win was exciting, Conor Goetz explains that the players were just as concerned with the Honduras and Panama game that was still being played when the U.S. team finally entered their locker room. The outcome of that match would have a serious impact on the U.S. team's position. Fresh off their recent victory and anxiously awaiting a spot in soccer's quadrennial extravaganza, the team crowded around a single television set in the locker room in order the watch Honduras tie Panama in a suspenseful matchup.

The fans and the dedicated coaches agree that the team more than deserved their seventh consecutive spot in the finals. Passionate player Eddie Johnson was responsible for the first goal in the 49th minute of the game. Dempsey discussed the situation when he stated that it had been a long journey for his team and they were elated to have the opportunity to go to the World Cup.

The loss represents the first time that Mexico has been in danger of missing the World Cup in over 20 years. Conor Goetz states that Mexico has been able to snag a spot in the World Cup every single year since 1990 but there is no telling if they will be able to pull it off this season. Despite the fact that Mexico is widely recognized as a solid soccer team, they were unable to score during the U.S. match and appeared deflated after Johnson's goal. The win adds to the fact that the American team has consistently won in Columbus since 2000, without losing a home qualifier since 2001.
