Rosh Hashanah (directly translated as "head of the year"), also known as the Jewish New Year, takes place on the first two days of Tishrei, the seventh month on the Hebrew calendar. In the Jewish oral tradition, Rosh Hashanah marks the completion of the creation of the world, and is the only Jewish holiday observed for two days by the whole of the Jewish community. Special prayer books, called mahzors, were distributed for the service, allowing for a "spiritual wake-up call". This year, The Chai Center and the rest of the Jewish community around the world observed Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Commonly referred to as the "holiest holiday of the Jewish year," Yom Kippur is a day of atonement in which Jews reflect on the past year and ask for forgiveness for their sins. It marks the end of the Ten Days of Awe that begin during Rosh Hashanah, and includes a twenty-four hour fast that prohibits all food and drink.
