In a new statement to the press, Loncar says, "The last thing any driver wants--male or female--is to be stranded at night in a dark and unfamiliar neighborhood, facing not only vehicle maintenance, but also the foreignness and uncertainty of the area. The firm of Brian Loncar & Associates is passionate about enhancing community safety, and as such we think the safety considerations in this article are essential."
High on the list of safety tips from The Globe and Mail is vehicle maintenance. The need to pull over, and the risk of getting stranded somewhere, are both decreased when the driver keeps the car tuned up, the tires checked, and the gas tank full.
The article also makes a plug for roadside assistance; for U.S. drivers, the most common option is probably AAA. The article advocates for drivers to have cell phones and cell phone chargers handy--but also to refrain from talking on those phones while they drive, even hands-free. "Even hands-free talking or texting is a danger to motorists, because it brings with it cognitive distraction," says the press statement from Brian Loncar & Associates.
The Globe and Mail article also recommends that drivers have all of their travel planning and arrangements made, long before they actually get behind the wheel.
"Know where you're going, especially if it's somewhere new," the article cautions. "Have a proper map, as well as setting and testing your navigation system. If you're heading to a hotel, have a reservation. Try to get in before dark."
Locked doors are important for any motorist. For doors that do not automatically lock, the article recommends that drivers lock them when they are in the car and immediately after they get out. "Don't leave your car unlocked even for a moment," The Globe and Mail urges.
"The bottom line is that drivers can never be too careful, either on the road or off," Loncar concludes. "A final tip that we would add is knowing the name and number of a good personal injury lawyer in your area, just in case something goes wrong and you need legal assistance."
