The genre of science fiction explores the effect that new discoveries have on humanity in the future. Famous sci-fi author Isaac Asimov defined the genre as "the branch of literature dealing with the reaction of human beings to changes in science and technology." In Counterfeit Youth, the science element is the progression of modern medicine over the next 40 years. "I believe the future of medicine will very soon challenge our core thoughts on what it means to be human," said Avanessian. "My novella explores this topic through my central character Jackson Riley, a young billionaire obsessed with immortality that might tear him apart from reality and his lover."

Avanessian chose to self-publish his novella as an ebook. "I'm a strong believer that the novella market has gained new life through the rise of ebook sales," said Avanessian.
