5 Tips for This Year’s Gift Procrastinators

The Christmas deadline is fast approaching but it seems many Australians aren’t too fussed. That’s because online platforms and fast shipping have many shoppers waiting until the last minute to purchase their holiday gifts.

With so many planning to wait until the 11th hour, Adrenaline, Australia’s most popular gift website, has compiled a last-minute shopping cheat sheet to make those last-minute gift grabs a little easier.

Research from Finder.com.au shows that one in ten planned to leave their shopping until the last minute and buy their gifts this week or later. Around 18% of men were expected to wait until the week before Christmas to start shopping, compared to 7% of women.

“The growth of online shopping and improvements in shipping has made it more tempting than ever to keep pushing gift shopping to the last minute. While some may prefer to buy months in advance, there are luckily lots of great options for the procrastinators among us, me included” said David Holmes, Managing Director of Adrenaline.com.au. “Even on Christmas Eve, we see enormous uptake in our print at home vouchers, allowing the last-minute-Larry in all of us to turn disaster into triumph on Christmas Day.”

How to Win at Last Minute Gifts

  1. The trusty gift voucher – You may think a gift card is the easy way out when it comes to gifting, but research conducted this year by Honeycomb Strategy found that gift vouchers top the list of the gift Australians are most excited to receive for Christmas (61%). It’s a safe bet that the person you are gifting to will enjoy picking something out that they’ll really love or taking advantage of the Boxing Day sales.

  1. Gift them a ‘life’ - Experience-based gifting has increased by 39 per cent over the last year as Australians increasingly prefer trips, unique activities and once-in-a-lifetime adventures over traditional material things such as clothes, accessories and gadgets. Platforms like Adrenaline make it easy to gift an unforgettable experience, even if you’re buying and printing your gift out on Christmas morning!

  1. Faster than ever – The cut-off dates for express or priority shipping this year range from the 18th to the 21stbut the arrival of Amazon in Australia has encouraged more companies to increase their shipping options. Even small boutiques may be able to offer day and same day shipping for customers, so it’s worth checking the cut-off dates for your favourite stores. You might just experience a Christmas shipping miracle!

  1. Keep the credit coming – Your loved ones likely have an app they use all of the time, so consider gifting them some extra credit to keep the games, music, videos or shopping rolling. You can give credit for apps like iTunes, Google Play and you can even gift apps from the App Store.

  1. Brave the store – Of course, the other way to score last minute gifts is to hit the shops! Many stores offer extended hours in the lead up and are open on Christmas Eve. Don’t forget to pick up some wrapping paper!

“Last-minute shopping will become even easier in coming years as Amazon cements its footprint in Australia. Last year, around 50% of online sales in the US on the Monday prior to Christmas were made on Amazon, with many trusting that the company’s two-day delivery offer would ensure their gifts arrived on time.”

“There are so many gift options that enable shoppers to give something that is personalised and meaningful to love ones, even at the last minute!”
