Kaleeya Hospital site sells to aged care provider

Monday, 8 December 2014
  • First sales under State Government land asset sale program
  • Kaleeya Hospital site purchased by Southern Cross Care (WA) Inc
  • Integrated health and wellness facility for the aged to be built

Kaleeya Hospital site is one of the first sites to sell under the State Government’s land asset sales program, which will generate $17.5 million to help reduce the State’s debt.

Premier Colin Barnett and Lands Minister Terry Redman today announced the sale of the 10,001 square metre site to Southern Cross Care (WA) Inc, which plans to deliver an aged care service and integrated health and wellness facility.

Mr Barnett said a further 18 sites, including four hospital precincts, had been identified for sale as part of the first round of the property asset sale program, where initial sales are expected to raise $250 million.

“These sites have been identified as surplus to the Government’s requirements and with the opening of the new Fiona Stanley Hospital, there is no need to keep the Kaleeya Hospital in Government hands,” he said.

“Kaleeya has a long association with health care in the East Fremantle area and I am pleased to see the site will continue to be used to provide care to the community.”

Mr Redman said LandCorp ran a public tender process which attracted strong national interest from the private health and investment sectors.

“The public tender process and national advertising campaign managed by LandCorp gained strong interest from potential investors, with more than five tenders received to purchase the Kaleeya Hospital site,” Mr Redman said.

“This is the first sale as part of the property asset sale program and I welcome the transfer to private ownership with Southern Cross Care (WA) Inc and the associated revenue boost.”

Announced in December 2013, the closure of Kaleeya Hospital’s services will see all obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatal services transferred to Fiona Stanley Hospital; sub-acute services, such as aged care, to Fremantle Hospital; and elective surgery distributed between both hospitals.

Lot 500 Shaw Road in Wanneroo was also recently sold, generating $3.7 million for the State Government.
