How to maximise office space and improve productivity through design

I love working in my office. It has been designed with plenty of natural light, artwork and beautiful details that make it a great place to come to work, and a great place to get things done. I actually like coming into work in the mornings, and that’s saying alot considering how much I disliked coming into my old office! It wasn’t that the work was bad - as I was doing the same thing as I’m doing now - or that the people were not friendly (I have the same team). No, it was the fact that the office itself was a dull space, and it was very claustrophobic with no natural light and plenty of drab grey walls and fluro bulbs. Not a particularly nice way to work. Since I’ve changed offices, I have noticed that there have been some changes with my employees - in that my staff are far happier - and in productivity. We are getting a lot more done in the workplace, and I have a suspicion that it has something to do with the fact that the surrounds are much more pleasant.

After doing some research, I can say with confidence that a clean, light and airy workplace provides a more pleasant working environment for workers, and this in turn increases productivity. I wasn’t surprised by these findings, because I have long known the importance of having a clean, tidy and ergonomic workspace for myself, but to know that it extends to the office space too, was a great thing to know. I designed my new workspace after looking online at some office fitouts in Melbourne businesses that were similar to what I do, and drawing some inspiration from Instagram and design magazines. I have got a couple of tips here for you to follow which you can take a look at if you’re thinking of designing your own office space to improve productivity.

Office Layout

The layout of your office is one of the most important things that you’re going to be working on, as it will make a huge difference to the flow of your workday if things are planned out well. Office layout encompasses things like where the desks are located, where printers and office supplies are, and where meeting rooms are positioned. The ways in which desks are allocated as well, will be something to consider. You should also think about whether you want people at a fixed desk, or whether you’ll have ‘floating’ desks for people.

Office ergonomics

The ergonomics of your workplace are important as it will mean the difference between a comfortable, safe workspace and one that may cause unnecessary fatigue or strain on people. Be sure to figure out what kind of desks you need for your workspace, and whether it’s important to get things like standing desks, ergonomic chairs and the like.

Office facelift

Sometimes, if your budget doesn’t allow for a brand new office, a facelift will do the trick in terms of boosting morale and improving flow. It can be as simple as investing in some new artwork for the walls, getting a new coat of paint on the office walls and bringing in some plants which can make the office appear a lot more friendly and welcoming.

Worker morale

Be sure to include employees and workers in the office renovation or facelift, as this will help them to feel more included and part of the family. This will in turn improve worker morale as they feel valued!

I hope that these short tips on enhancing your office space have been helpful, and that you manage to strike the right balance between design and ergonomic flow!
