The Nation has decided: dolphins are the smartest animals and dogs are the cutest

NEW YORK, Oct. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- YouGov has launched their inaugural U.S. animal awards!

Using their daily YouGov Omnibus survey of over 1,000 American adults representative of the population, YouGov asked a number of questions around animals, including which are the most intelligent, cute, and strong.

And the results are in. According to the American public, the most intelligent animal is…the Dolphin!

Achieving almost one third (31%) of the vote, dolphins swim into first place for braininess. They are followed by chimpanzees swinging in second with 24% and dogs reaching third with 13% of the popular vote.

The public has puppy-dog eyes for pooches…

Dogs narrowly scrape the award for "Cutest Animal" with 29% of the popular vote.

Special mentions for other domestic companions in this category with cats (24%) making second place and rabbits (17%) ranked third.

Elephants flex their muscles in a show of strength…

Elephants top the chart for the strongest animal, voted by four in ten (38%) American adults.

Killer whales can bask in the glory of their being placed second (16%) and the gorillas will be beating their chests at receiving 11% of the popular vote.

Note on Methodology

Total sample size for this YouGov Omnibus poll was 1107 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 16th - 18th October 2013.  The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all US adults (aged 18+).
