Brisbane 10 March 2014. Hiring limousines could become more affordable for Queenslanders as the Newman Government looks to cut red tape in the industry.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said a discussion paper is now open for feedback from today and focuses on options to reduce or simplify limousine regulations making it more affordable for passengers.

“We promised at the election to revitalise frontline services and we can deliver on that commitment as we listen to what Queenslanders want,” Mr Emerson said.

“Labor bogged the industry down in red tape, but we understand its importance to growing the Queensland economy and want to make sure we are maximising the benefits.

“A number of options in the discussion paper will be open for feedback including value of vehicles, age limits and wheelbase requirements for limousines.

“If these requirements are changed they could result in the limo industry becoming more affordable for Queenslanders and having a greater variety of vehicles on offer.

“Factors such as the high dollar and competition in the motor industry impact the criteria that determines which vehicles can be used as luxury vehicles to provide limousine services.

“Given these pressures we feel it is time to open up discussion about the existing rules and assess whether they are still relevant in today’s market place.

“Some luxury motor vehicles are used to provide high-end taxi services, so taxi operators and owners are encouraged to view the discussion paper and provide comment about the options as well.”

Mr Emerson said the discussion paper was a starting point to gather feedback about the effectiveness of current rules and to understand public and industry opinion about the effect any changes would have.

The discussion paper will be available on the Get Involved and TMR website www.tmr.qld.gov.au from Monday 10 March with feedback open until Monday 12 May.
