Hey, Don't Look! That's My Server!

With the recent cyber attacks and governments changing laws, everyone wants to be a little more private. Now, of course, you can achieve this by simply not using the internet at all. But, for a business, this won’t be possible. And, for one of the weakest chinks in the chain, businesses need to put in extra efforts. That chink in a company’s website. Most companies don’t do enough to secure their site. So, sometimes it’s best to go all out and choose the option that covers absolutely everything. This is where a VPS comes in.

Traditionally, most small businesses use shared servers to host their websites. Dedicated servers are far too expensive, and there aren’t really any other options. But, shared servers can present some risk. Because you’re sharing a server with other people, it’s much easier for your content to be accessed from the back. Some people out there have the knowledge to circumvent the systems the host puts in place to minimise this risk. This means that you’re never truly safe when using them. Of course, the chances that you’ll be caught out will be slim. But, it’s simply not worth taking the risk. Thankfully, there’s an easy way to avoid the risk entirely.

VPS stands for virtual private server. In essence, it’s a cross between a shared and dedicated server. The server is shared by many people. But, instead of everyone running on the same system, everyone has their own virtual server. So, each person shares resources. But, they don’t share the same file spaces or systems. This makes the whole thing much more secure. Where VPS hosting really shines is the price. You can get a package that won’t set you back much more than a shared server, with most of the features of a dedicated one. This makes it much more cost effective that paying for a dedicated server. Plus, these are easier to set up than something dedicated; the systems can already be ready when you buy a plan.

When you have a server like this, you basically have something dedicated. Just like a dedicated server, a VPS can do things like run custom software. This enables you to use the server for more than just web hosting. If you wanted, you could run something like a video game or VOIP server from a VPS. And, this is along with your regular website. People can’t access the site without proper credentials. So, you never have to worry that your data will be stolen or your emails will be read; it’s all completely secure. In fact, some companies use these simply because they’re so secure. Not just because of the cost saving benefits.

Hopefully, this will help you on your way to securing your emails and data. As a business, it’s very important that things like customer and staff data safe. Losing it can cause a lot of trouble for a new business. And, it will hurt your reputation. So, it’s worth keeping this sort of information as safe as possible; even if it costs a little bit of money.
