Pearls: Nature’s Finest Gift

Finding the perfect gift for the perfect person may seem like an impossible task, but there is one gift that captures unique, natural beauty in an enduring symbol of devotion.

Pearls are a gift to last a lifetime.

Exclusive, and years in the making, every pearl is one-of-a-kind; a symbol of the random beauty that brings us together.

Pearls have historically been one of the most sought-after and precious commodities known to man. Originating from one of the most unlikely places for a thing of such value and beauty, pearls are harvested from inside the shells of oysters.

Until cultured pearls became commonplace in the early 20th Century, these gems were extremely rare their production and discovery was left essentially to chance, which made pearls one of the rarest and most valuable jewels used in jewellery.

There are several different types of pearl, each derived from different sources.

Freshwater Pearls are the least expensive of the pearls on the market today. Cultured in freshwater mussels, freshwater pearls must be labeled as such in commercial transactions to avoid confusion or misrepresentation as more conventional saltwater varieties.

Keshi Pearls are cultured saltwater pearls which are non-spherical shapes and were originally created accidentally when pearl ‘seeding’ did not worked as planned, creating odd shaped pearls.

Tahitian pearls are sometimes called ‘black pearls’ because of their dark colours. Rarely a true black colour, Tahitian pearls come in various shades of green, purple, grey, silver and other tones.

South Sea Pearls grow in the large Pinctada maxima pearl oyster and have a long history of harvest and cultivation off the coasts of Northern Western Australia, as well as Tahiti and the Phillipines.

Varying slightly in colour from silvery white to deep golden colour, South Sea Pearls are also highly sought after for their ‘orient’ - a term used to describe the transparency and overlay of colours and textures and lustre.

South Sea Pearls are the most expensive pearls harvested and sold today, and used by the world’s most high-end jewellers to make a variety of different of pieces, from earrings and brooches to necklaces.
