Using smart technology in senior living

Artificial intelligence to virtual reality and assistive technology solutions are dominating the senior living market, helping the elderly live longer, healthier lives – and Tunstall Healthcare Managing Director, Lyn Davies is at the forefront of this industry in the Asia-Pacific market.

With 25 years of experience in leadership roles across the public and private sectors, Lyn understands the importance of using technology to support people in vulnerable situations, as well as the support it provides to medical professionals in the workplace. Moving to Tunstall Healthcare as the General Manager in 2004, she was promoted to Managing Director in 2012. Her mission, to make a meaningful difference.

“Here at Tunstall, the work we do makes a difference and that’s meaningful to me. It’s such a diverse and interesting market, where anything is possible if you put your mind to it. That’s the type of environment I want to be in, where what we do makes a difference,” Lyn says.

Under her leadership, Tunstall Healthcare is saving lives, leading the way in digital healthcare and delivering services to over 60,000 people. It is Tunstall Healthcare’s early beginnings – Norman Tunstall’s own personal need to keep his Mum safe – that inspires Lyn to keep listening to her clients and working on solutions.

“Tunstall has provided me the opportunity to work closely with some amazing organisations and individuals who are delivering healthcare, community care and home support programs to some of the most vulnerable people in our society. The carers and providers in our industry who support our clients in their everyday lives are the unsung heroes. They inspire me every day to do more, try harder and be the best we can be,” she says.

With only six per cent of ASX200 companies with female CEOs, Lyn feels encouraged to participate in the debate surrounding gender diversity and look at ways to create opportunities in the workplace where women can aspire to leadership roles.

Her advice for women, “Think about your career often, don’t get comfortable. If you see opportunity to increase your skills, educate yourself more and learn from others, then grab it with both hands. If you’re not getting the support you need, then don’t blame the system, work around it, change the system or move on. There are barriers for sure, but do what you can to break them down, individuals make a difference every day.”

Lyn’s can-do attitude and innovative leadership approach keeps Tunstall ahead of the game – even amongst a growing ageing population and increase in chronic diseases. Disproving the common misconception that technology and seniors do not mix, her work is allowing Australians to live independently for longer.

“The future of assistive technology and healthcare includes artificial intelligence, cloud technologies that apply to virtual clinics, hospital in the home, prevention and early response. I see Tunstall as a significant service provider in the delivery of these connected healthcare solutions, with a range of service offerings, support programs and diverse technology to meet a growing and discerning market,” Lyn says.
