How to treat feeling home sick while travelling for business

Let’s admit it; goodbyes are never easy regardless of how many times we say them. Any time you’re in a new place and more so when you’ve traveled alone, the feelings of loneliness and melancholy can easily overwhelm you. This not only affects your mood, but it can also negatively impact how you manage the same businesses that took you there.

The good thing is that it is possible to cope with homesickness. You only need to cultivate the right state of mind and apply the seven tactics that we will share with you below.

Find a familiar space

One of the most effective ways to treat homesickness is to operate or live in a place that makes you feel at home. For example, try to find a café or restaurant that serves similar foods to the ones prepared for you back home. For accommodation, consider renting a fully furnished corporate apartment whose setup and décor is carefully chosen to make you feel comfortable  and at home.

Be patient with yourself

The first few days are certainly going to be tough especially if it’s your first time traveling for business. Luckily, time is a healer which means it can only get better for you as time passes and you get more accustomed to your new environment. Appreciate the fact that you were always going to feel this way and that eventually, you’ll recover.

While you are at it, remind yourself how hard you’ve worked to be where you’re in your career or business growth. By being positive and appreciative, you will find that it’s easier to cope with homesickness.

Stay busy

Staying busy on the agendas of your business trip is an easy way to forget about the experiences causing your homesickness. Where possible, jam-pack your days with meetings, excursions, and anything that keeps your mind engaged. In addition to helping you achieve your goals for the trip faster and learning more about the destination, you will end up with valuable memories that last you a lifetime. What’s more, you will be happier about your whole experience and possibly go back home feeling more achieved.

Meet and interact with new people

Another excellent way to take your mind off your homesickness is to meet new people and make friends. This can be at business meetings, your local café or evenyour neighbor, etc. Lucky you if you find someone who knows the city or destination more than you do.They will probably love to show you around or educate you on places you can visit when you want to explore.

On the other hand, talking to others who are or have been in a similiar position as you , will leave you feeling better. You might even collect some valuable advice on battling homesickness.

Keep in touch (or avoid it)

The modern technology has made it easier to reach anyone we want in just a few taps of some buttons. Whether that is through social media, emails, or services like Skype and Face Time, there’s no shortage of communication channels today.

Keeping in close touch with your loved ones can have two effects on you. For some, it could worsen their homesickness. For others, it brings a lot of satisfaction and enables them to cope better. Depending on how it makes you feel, you can choose to increase or reduce the number of times you connect with your family and friends.

Take good care of yourself

You’re likely to eat healthier and exercise more when you’re at home than when on the road for a business trip. But that shouldn’t always be the case. Never give up entirely on your wellbeing or health just because you’re out on a trip. The unhealthy lifestyle will likely eat into your productivity and leave your body feeling lethargic. The result? Poor business results and increased chances of developing lifestyle conditions.

Try to create some time amidst your busy schedule to exercise your body. This can include engaging in an exercise as simple as hiking and walking around your neighborhood. Your body and business will thank you for it.

Take lots of photos

Pictures are an excellent way to keep memories of special things that have happened in our lives. They are also a fantastic way to explore a new destination and learn more about it. By taking photos and reviewing them later in the day, you will appreciate the new place and the reason you’re visiting.

What else are you doing to cope with homesickness and improve your productivity on your business trip? We’d love to hear your experiences.
