Australian government to use mobile IT

Canberra 12 June 2013. Government agencies will use mobile technology to deliver better, more convenient services to Australians under a new Australian Public Service Mobile Roadmap released today by Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy Senator Stephen Conroy and Special Minister of State Mark Dreyfus QC.

“Increasingly Australians want to be able to access government services and information when and where they choose.  With the widespread popularity of smartphones, tablets and 4G networks across the country, mobile technology has the potential to greatly simplify the way Australians use government services,” Senator Conroy said.

The Roadmap will help the Australian Public Service (APS) embrace the potential for providing services and information using mobile devices.

The Roadmap supports the Government’s “Digital First” policy, which requires agencies to make key services available online, including on mobile platforms, by December 2017.

“This will help achieve the Government’s target for 80 per cent of Australians to choose to engage with the government online by 2020,” Senator Conroy said.

Mr Dreyfus said mobile services were not only innovative and easy to use, but would increase productivity and transform service delivery.

“As more and more Australians conduct business from the ‘anytime, anywhere’ convenience of their smartphones and tablets, they expect that same level of access to government services,” Mr Dreyfus said.

The Roadmap has been developed to complement and enhance a range of other initiatives to improve the use of technology by the Australian government, including the Update to the National Digital Economy Strategy and the Australian Public Service Information and Communications Technology Strategy 2012-2015, which recognise the far-reaching potential of mobile technology to transform service delivery by the public sector.

The Roadmap is available is available on the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) website at agimo.gov.au/mobile.
