Darwin 22 July 2013. Recommendations about the Business Tenancies (Fair Dealings) Act have been released in a draft report which seeks comment from stakeholders and the public.

The Act is intended to create certainty and fairness in retail shop leasing arrangements between landlords and tenants.

Attorney-General John Elferink has encouraged businesses and landlords to comment on the legislation, which has been in place since July 2004.

“The Northern Territory has changed a great deal since the Act came into effect and a review of the legislation is well overdue,” Mr Elferink said.

“The Act requires a review of its operation, however the former Labor Government failed to complete this review – potentially to the detriment of affected Territory businesses.

“It is important to this Government that we hear the opinions of those that are affected by the legislation, including landlords and tenants operating with retail leases.

“This process reflects the Government’s commitment to reduce red tape where possible and ensure that the message is clear that the Northern Territory is open for business,” Mr Elferink said.

Comments and feedback on the Business Tenancies (Fair Dealings) Act are due by 14 September 2013
