Darwin new suburb of Kilgariff to create jobs

Darwin 17 May 2013. The Territory Government is calling for proposals to develop the first stage of the new suburb of Kilgariff, 18 months ahead of the former Labor Government’s schedule.

Chief Minister Adam Giles said Kilgariff Stage 1 will deliver at least 100 new lots to the market, boosting housing affordability and creating new job opportunities.

“This Government is committed to easing the cost of living by boosting the supply of new and reasonably priced houses across the Territory,” Mr Giles said.

“Kilgariff Stage 1 will deliver land for at least 100 new homes, providing opportunities to build your own home in a brand new suburb. By developing Kilgariff, this Government is ensuring there is land available to meet housing demand now and into the future as the economy and population of Alice Springs grows.”

Kilgariff is the first major residential development south of the Gap and is expected to meet demand for housing in Alice Springs for 20 years, across a number of development stages.

Mr Giles said the Government was seeking expressions of interest from developers for the 13-hectare Stage 1 site to deliver a minimum of 100 lots with job opportunities for local residents and businesses.

More than $10 million is being invested to deliver headworks to the Kilgariff site.

A further $3.5 million will be granted to the successful developer to support the construction of key infrastructure for the whole suburb, including the main entry road, drainage and trunk sewer.

“I expect a preferred proponent will be appointed by the end of August, and we will work with the developer to get lots for sale off the plan as soon as possible after that,” Mr Giles said.

An industry briefing on the Kilgariff Stage 1 Request for Proposals (RFP) will be held in Alice Springs on Monday 27 May.

The RFP will be released on 29 May 2013 and close on 10 July 2013.  Proponents must their register interest in the project by 28 May 2013. www.lands.nt.gov.au/land-release/
