The Four Main Types of Industrial Heat Exchangers and Their Uses

Plate & Frame Heat Exchangers

The frame consists of a head, follower, column, carrying and guiding bar and a number of clamping bolts. The gaskets are actually glued onto the plates and there are intermediate gaskets fitted eliminating the risk of the medias meeting. Welded Plate & Shell Heat Exchanger

This works in the same way as a traditional pipe heat exchanger, yet it is more efficient, as more of the liquid is exposed over the plates than in a pipe. The advantages with this type of heat exchanger are 1) No gaskets, 2) No leakage, 3) Small space requirement, and this device can work at temperatures up to 25O°C. The plate & shell heat exchanger is suitable for steam and thermal oil heating or as a condenser for refrigerants and is used in many different industries.



Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger

Due to simplicity, this type is very reasonably priced when compared to other heat exchangers. The unit can operate at all temperatures between -180°C and 200°C, making it ideal for mining and oil facilities, with operating pressures up to 30 bar. This is a lightweight unit that can be attached to the pipes without the need for supports. There are no gaskets and therefore, no risk of leakage.


Free Flow Plate Heat Exchanger

There is no metal contact between the plates and this is recommended for use with fibrous materials, such as fruit juice and ice cream and can operate continuously at high temperatures. Most food outlets will have one on their drinks dispensers, as this provides an efficient cooling system to keep the product in tip-top condition. Also used in the making of yoghurts and sauces, the free flow plate design can easily be cleaned or replaced, making it ideal for many food applications.
