Types of Duct Systems

Flexible Ductwork

These types of ducts are usually tubular that are made with wire coil, with a plastic layer that is bendable and durable, which serves as a cover and protection, and a layer of insulation that surrounds the whole duct. When a ducting is needed to be installed on a complex and tricky space, it is best to use these flexible ducting compared to the rigid ducts, due to their flexibility.

Just like other parts of a central air-conditioning system, there are specific requirements for installing flexible duct systems. For example, flexible ducting must be supported correctly and secured properly to avoid damages and deformations. Bends and turns should also be minimized and lessened because of its bad effects, such as reducing the airflow and the efficiency and effectiveness of the air conditioning system. These flexible ducts have the advantage of being easy to install compared to the other type of ducting, they also cost less. These are also easy to clean and maintain, but for hassle-free, speedy, and reliable cleaning and maintenance, you may contact Epic Duct Cleaning

Rigid Ductwork

Rigid duct systems have different kinds based on the materials used and their sizes, they can also be categorized based on their shape, such as rectangular or cylindrical. These ducts are hard, enduring, and dependable. These are also insulated properly just like flexible ducting. The most commonly known and used kinds are:

Sheet metal ducts

These are the most common ducts that everyone may know. We must have seen these ducts in some movies where characters were crawling inside. The typical materials used for producing these are galvanized-steel and aluminum. Installation procedures are just simple, aluminum is not that heavy. The advantage of these kinds of ducting is that they are the least to develop and harbor unsafe molds due to their non-permeable surfaces.

Fiberglass lined ducts

These are like sheet metal ducts but they have an interior or exterior lining made of fiberglass. These are commonly found and installed in office and business structures due to their characteristics that suppress the noise produced by the air conditioning unit. One of the disadvantages of these kinds of ducts can be seen in the long-term use, wherein they may fall apart and then release fiberglass particles in the atmosphere which is a huge health concern. Another disadvantage is that they are hard to clean because cleaning these ducts may cause the deterioration of the fiberglass lining.

Fiberboard ducts

Fiberboard ducts are made of fiberboard which is produced using strands of fiberglass that have been compressed and compacted, then bonded with resin or gum, and finally covered with a foil sheet for moisture protection. These ducts are great for cooling and heating systems because of their insulation. However, they are not recommended to be used for ventilation due to the high potential of growing mold. Their rough surfaces may also affect the efficiency and airflow.

Semi-Rigid Ducts

These kinds of ducts are considered as the best type of ventilation ducting available in the market due to their excellent quality and guaranteed no leakage ventilation that helps the system operate on its full potential and optimal performance. The only downside is their high crushability level. Besides that, they offer versatility because ducts shape can be switched between rectangular or cylindrical without sacrificing any hydraulic pressure or performance. These are the easiest ducts to maintain because they are built with anti-static and anti-bacterial linings.
