REDWOOD CITY, Calif. & SUNTEC CITY, Singapore--(BUSINESS WIRE)--LTE Asia
“Taken together, factors such as bigger screens and increased subscriber awareness of rich media are causing dramatic surges in usage of mobile data in most APAC regions leading to increased network costs and decreased user experience as parts of the network infrastructure become overloaded and congestion occurs”
Openwave Mobility, a software innovator enabling operators to manage and monetize growth in mobile video, today announced that a Tier-1 Asia Pacific telecommunications operator has seen a 35 percent improvement on its end-user experience through Openwave Mobility’s Congestion Control solution.
The operators’ controlled trial measured customer experience under congested network conditions using a variety of mobile devices including smart phones and tablets. Users performed a variety of Internet-based tasks, including general web browsing and especially video streaming, in both optimized and non-optimized conditions.
Participants experienced several benefits when undertaking the tasks in optimized conditions. These included quicker video start time and noticeably less buffering and stuttering on playback. The vast majority of users stated that they preferred watching videos that played immediately and smoothly, and viewing web pages with faster load times, at the expense of marginal visual degradation. Users noted that they preferred this scenario over higher visual quality with interrupted playback and slower page load times. Overall the Mean Opinion Scores increased by 35 percentage points. A similar increase was also observed in the Net Promoter Score which measures how likely a participant is to recommend the service to a friend.
Wireless network operators in the Asia Pacific region are seeing an increase in network congestion due to a number of factors such as growing number of subscribers with data enabled devices and surging video traffic both in the developed and developing markets. Applications such as Skype and FaceTime that use front facing cameras on high resolution mobile devices are adding to the video upload traffic as well as conventional download traffic. Moreover, as LTE networks are being rolled out in developed markets users are encouraged to download richer content more of the time.
“Taken together, factors such as bigger screens and increased subscriber awareness of rich media are causing dramatic surges in usage of mobile data in most APAC regions leading to increased network costs and decreased user experience as parts of the network infrastructure become overloaded and congestion occurs,” said Sue Rudd, Director of Service Provider Analysis at Strategy Analytics. “These trial results demonstrate what we are seeing elsewhere that video optimization applied intelligently and selectively to congestion hotspots can make a huge difference to end user quality of experience as well as ROI in terms of network capacity.”
Openwave Mobility's Congestion Control platform provides network congestion relief to targeted hotspots while maintaining an exceptional user experience.
