SAVING THE BEES WITH LIP BALM

BURTS BEES LAUNCHES PLANTABLE PAPER PACK TO HELP BRING BACK THE BEES

Joy Delis, Marketing Director for Burts Bees ANZ, talks about the importance of saving the bees, and how we can help create a brighter, more sustainable future for humanity by becoming powerful pollinators.

After a tragic beginning to 2020 when 15.6 million hectares of native Australian forests were destroyed by bushfires, Australia’s bee population is facing a more serious threat than ever before. That’s why we, at Burt’s Bees, are launching a Limited Edition Bring Back The Bees Pomegranate Lip Balm, featuring plantable paper inside the pack.

The bees are nature’s powerhouse- they may be small, but one third of the food we eat relies on them for pollination, including fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts, as well as feed for livestock.1 Due to increasing urbanisation and destruction of the natural environment the world bee population has been declining at a perilous rate. In the US alone, average numbers dropped by up to 65% in some states between October 2018 and April 2019.2

Experts warn that this sharp decline in numbers is unsustainable and poses a serious threat to agriculture worldwide. Without the bees, we would not have important crops such as cotton and flax. We also would not have flowers, fruits, vegetables, seeds or nuts. The bees disappearing forever will create a ripple effect that would disrupt the earth’s biodiversity.

This Spring, Burt’s Bees is calling on our followers everywhere to become powerful pollinators in their own back yards. Bees rely on the pollen and nectar from flowers to survive,3 so if everyone planted some flowers we would be taking a huge and crucial first step towards increasing bee populations everywhere.

Our Bring Back The Bees Lip Balm includes Swan River Daisy seeds- an Australian native flower that thrives all year round, in either a pot or a garden, enabling our people to grow their own bee-friendly environment at work or home.4 A portion of proceeds from the sale of each Limited Edition Bring Back the Bees Pomegranate Lip Balm will go to the Wheen Bee Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that promotes bee-health awareness and research in Australia.

We have also teamed up with Floraly, a leading sustainable flower delivery service. Around one in three florist flowers die in a store or warehouse before being bought, but Floraly only acquires flowers after they have been ordered — creating less waste and leaving more for the bees.5 Floraly has created a Bee Friendly Bouquet, which will be made up of the flowers that Australian native bees love, including paper daisies, snap dragons, boronia flowers and proteas, accented with woolly bush and decorative gum foliage.

In a world facing a looming environmental crisis and a precarious future, it is now more important than ever that we all play a role in doing what we can to protect nature- including looking after the bees. As long-time friends of the bees, Burt’s Bees is committed to raising awareness about bee-related issues, ensuring that bee populations, and our wonderfully diverse natural ecosystem, are protected and preserved for future generations to come.

Burts Bees Bring Back the Bees Pomegranate Lip Balm is available from Chemist Warehouse, Priceline and Woolworths for $6.95 from 1st October 2020. The Floraly Bee Friendly Bouquet is available from the 13th October for $65.
