How to Properly Sanitize Your Things During a Move

If you are moving, you may be understandably concerned about how to keep your belongings and your new home free of the COVID-19 virus. The good news is that the best way to fight the virus is with good old fashioned soap and water and common sense. Here is how to properly sanitize your belongings during a move to help take the stress out of moving.

Wash Your Hands

Frequent handwashing with soap and water for 20 seconds is one of the best ways to fight the spread of the virus. So before you start packing, wash your hands. After moving your boxes, please wash your hands, when you are ready to unpack your boxes, you guessed it. Wash your hands.

If you don’t have access to soap and water at any stage in your move, keep some alcohol-based hand sanitizer around to clean your hands.

Have Cleaning Products on Hand

You can kill the virus with soap and water or an alcohol or bleach-based disinfectant. For this reason, it helps to have cleaning products on hand during your move. Things you need are clean rags, a disinfectant cleaner, gloves, masks, hand sanitizer, and hand soap.

If you are renting a moving truck, give all high touch areas of the truck a wipe down with a disinfectant before you drive it, or ask the rental company about their cleaning policies. If you are moving things into North York storage facilities, give high touch areas a quick wipe before you load in your belongings.

Ask everyone helping with the move to wear a mask and keep your distance.

During COVID-19, social distancing of 2 meters is recommended to stop the spread of the virus. It is also recommended that you only leave your house for essential purposes and limit your contact with others. When you are moving, all of these things become very difficult.

If you are working with a moving company, ask about their policies for preventing COVID-19 transmission or ask if they have health and safety consultants to inspect the area. Your movers should wear masks and practice frequent hand washing. It also helps to keep the doors open to maximize airflow and limit touching of door handles.

Keep your distance as much as possible, and if possible, designate a one-way path for entering and exiting the house to limit contact.

Clean High Touch Surfaces First

When you get to your new home, a good plan is to be thoroughly clean before moving your belongings. It is especially vital to clean high touch areas in the house such as light switches, doorknobs, handrails, handles, tables, chairs, touch screens, countertops, toilet handles, faucets and any other place that may be frequently touched.

It is also a good idea to give floors a good clean with a disinfectant and vacuum all carpets and rugs. This cleaning will remove any trace of the virus and anything left by the previous owners.

Designate a Clean and Dirty Zone of the House

When you are moving items into your new home, find a room to place all uncleaned items. A garage can work best for this if you have one. By organizing things in this way, you can control what comes into your home and make sure everything has been thoroughly wiped down and cleaned.

Wipe Down your moving boxes and items before unpacking

Before you unpack any cardboard boxes, please give them a spray and a wipe with a disinfectant. This process will kill any virus particles that may have landed on your boxes during the move. Once you unpack a box, remove the cardboard from your home and, you guessed it, wash your hands.
