In order to illustrate the varying results that the cosmetic surgery industry can offer, Dr. Aamer Khan points to a recent article from The New York Times that highlights a new study on the subject. The article reports, "Patients who get facial plastic surgery often assume that they will look younger and more appealing afterward. But a new study, the first to try to quantify attractiveness after a face-lift, brow-lift or eyelid surgery, found only a tiny, insignificant increase in attractiveness. The study, published online in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery on Thursday, also found that patients looked, on average, only three years younger, as judged by independent viewers who assessed photos of patients before and after cosmetic surgery."
While this may seem discouraging to all those considering any form of cosmetic surgery or treatment, Dr. Aamer Khan notes that the results of the study may not be all negative. Instead, Khan suggests that many individuals may be seeking an improvement in attractiveness through the wrong procedures that--in the end--deliver disappointing results. Dr. Khan explains, "Aging is caused by a number of different changes over a period of time. These include changes in the skin, in the volume of the face, in the balance of the muscles and even bone recession. Surgery will only deal with one or two of these problems and will not necessarily make people look significantly younger. Combined treatments--of surgical and non-surgical procedures--to address all the different signs of aging are more likely to give a more youthful and natural result."
While the article notes that the study did not include every type of cosmetic enhancement procedure--such as laser resurfacing--it does indicate that quantifying "attractiveness" is a cumbersome task for medical researchers. Although the definition of this quality may vary from person to person, Dr. Khan encourages all those in the field to make sure that patients have realistic expectations about what a certain procedure can do for them. In addition, he believes it is essential that all patients understand every option that have to attain a desired effect before going through with a procedure.
"The aim should be to look fresher, brighter and the best you can be still looking like you. Expectations need to be managed correctly without overpromising a result," Dr. Aamer Khan concludes.
