Comparethemarket.com.au has unveiled its second petrol analysis* for 2015 that confirms the nation’s petrol prices have risen 15.2 cents per litre (cpl) on average over the last two months compared to first quarter’s figures. Between 1 April to 1 June 2015, petrol prices jumped to an average of 133.4 cents per litre (cpl), up from 118.2cpl in the first three months of the year.

Free comparison website, comparethemarket.com.au, which updates its petrol price data three times daily across all major Australian cities, released today’s petrol figures which show the upward trajectory could continue for most capital cities as the long weekend looms.

Current petrol prices

Figures from 2 June 2015 show that Sydney’s motorists are currently paying an average of 138.5cpl. Savvy motorists should head to Blakehurst, Narwee or Allawah where they’ll be able to fill up for 123.9cpl.

Melbourne motorists are currently paying the least for their fuel, with the average fuel price hovering around 125.6cpl. Bargain low prices of 121.4cpl can currently be found in St Kilda.

Adelaide motorists are being slugged with the highest average price at the bowser (140.6cpl) but there are some indications that it could be the only capital to enjoy declining prices ahead of the Queen’s birthday weekend. Best prices at the moment can be found in Kilburn at 121.7cpl.

Brisbane drivers are facing average prices of 136.8cpl, with Waterford West currently being the cheapest area to fill up (121.6cpl).

Perth motorists are currently seeing prices of around 142cpl. The best deals are to be found at Mount Lawley and Scarborough with some petrol retailers offering prices as low as 117.7cpl.

Dips and peaks necessitate the use of fuel comparison tools

While the average cost of petrol increased across the board, volatility in prices was a factor over the last two months, with extreme price swings in many cities. In Melbourne in one week alone, prices dropped to 122.0cpl on 21 April then leapt to 138.7cpl.

Abigail Koch, spokesperson for comparethemarket.com.au said, “The unexpected dips and peaks in the price of petrol can make it difficult to work out when it’s best to fill up your car. This is when savvy motorists turn to fuel comparison tools to help them find the cheapest deal at the bowser in their area. Though cycles are unpredictable, these erratic movements are a sign of healthy competition in the market, as petrol stations try to undercut each other’s pricing to win customers.”

Comparethemarket.com.au also highlighted the most expensive and cheapest sub-regions for petrol in each major city that it analysed across the last two months. The most expensive sub-region for petrol in Australia was Sydney’s Northern Beaches with residents paying 138.7cpl.

Meanwhile, the nation’s cheapest sub-region over the last two months was Melbourne’s Frankston/Cranbourne and Vermont where residents paid an average of just 130cpl. This was closely followed by Sydney’s Hurstville which was just 0.1cpl higher at 130.1cpl.
