Top Five Overlooked Australian Destinations

When it comes to road tripping across Australia, there are just so many famous destinations that you may lose sight of some of the less well known, but just as amazing, hotspots across the country. Of course everybody knows to hit Melbourne, Sydney, and the Gold Coast, but there are a surprising amount of destinations that fewer people know about that are entirely worth hitting on your journey. These destinations are generally less crowded since less people know about them, meaning you can enjoy them all the more. So when you’re packing up the campervan hire and ready to set out on your trip, make sure to keep these in mind.

Rainbow Beach

Everybody tends to visit Hervey Bay if they are visiting Fraser Island, but few people know that Rainbow beach is actually more convenient and just as breathtaking. This massive beach is surrounding by dramatic cliffs, and it gets its rainbow moniker from its multicolored sand. You will run across much fewer tourists on this beach and can easily spend an entire day basing in its splendour.

The Southern Forests

When passing through the south, most people hit up the wineries, the famous surfing spots, and the caves. The lesser-known forest region, however, contains a plethora of hiking and outdoor activities plus a number of cool, rustic towns that are a joy to pass through. If traveling by campervan, this region is perfect since you can combine the outdoors with stops in towns for that perfect mix. Make sure not to overlook the southern forests if you are looking for a more laid back and less crowded route through the south.

Kings Canyon

While the Kata Tjuta and Uluru canyons get more attention and tourist visits, the nearby Kings Canyon is just as awe-inspiring. You can hike through the bottom through the green, leafy growth that sits in stark contrast to the red dirt moonscape beyond the canyon walls. Though not as huge as the others, Kings Canyon more than makes up for it with its lush scenery and unique rock formations.

The Fleurieu Peninsula

Most travelers breeze right through the Fleurieu on their way to Kangaroo Island, but you will be pleased to know that the Peninsula offers the same style of amazing wild beach and the same amount of wildlife as the Island. As an added bonus, there will be much fewer visitors to cramp your style. You will be free to roam the land in peace, knowing that you aren’t missing out on anything by not advancing to the main island. While in South Australia do not miss the best Adelaide Hills wineries.

The Gold Coast Hinterland

When travelers think of the Gold Coast, they most think of the beaches. Of course these beaches are amongst the most lovely in the world and you will certainly want to hit them on your trip, but also make sure to check out the less-popular Hinterlands. This series of national parks features stunning scenery, glow worm caves, and a plethora of quant small towns that are a joy to visit.

If you’re looking for a less-crowded trip, make sure to hit up these hidden spots along the road when you’re travelling Australia.
