Is Your Business Too Big?

E-mail Print PDF

You’ve seen the question - surely. Is your business too big? A bit of a weird question to ask, but is it? A big business can be released to succeed or it can become so full that it deflates and fails. If your business is getting big - your next steps are crucial.

Now, is your business big for a good reason?

There are a number of ways that your business can be big for no reason. The most common of all would be the fact that you have too many employees. It is very easy to overhire as you assess each business need as an individual need and thus a hole that an individual needs to fill. These holes can sometimes close on their own, or be covered by a team - meaning that a contracted employee becomes useless. Useless on your payroll. It can be hard to see with your own eyes if you are overstaffed, but your payroll will show it clear as day. Hiring the services of a good accountant can help you see where you are spending and if your payroll is too big, it might be time to make some changes. These changes will clearly be hard to make, but aren’t without merit. The business does have to come first.

What’s a good reason for being too big? Well - when demand is outpacing supply. That means the potential for more money is right there in the palm of your business's hand. You just need to grab it. How do you grab it? With expansion. If you need more hands on deck, you need to hire and if you need more space, you either need to renovate your current business, open a new store, or build a new store. You have these options.

The first thing to consider is the necessity of the expansion. If you are expanding without analyzing the current business situation, you may as well be steering the ship towards the rock because you’re heading for disaster. Expanding without cause is just like overhiring, except it isn’t nearly as easy a situation to repair. If you expand without reason, you’re going to be paying twice the bills and you’ll need to sell the expansion site.

Renovating is a good idea. Of course, it's not free - but it's worth the cost. Business renovation can not only expand on a current place of work offering more space for employees or storage, but it allow you iron out any issues in the building. Opening a new site is also a good idea - but it must be for a good reason and it needs to be a better reason than the basis for expansion. Speaking to land developers is a good way to get started here.

There are plenty of ways to grow, but first - ask yourself this. Is your business too big? Is demand exceeding supply? Ask the questions first, then answer them with growing your business. Don’t expand before it is too early though, otherwise you will truly pay the price.
