Protecting your business from cyber security attacks

Cyber security is somewhat like tennis between businesses and hackers. New methods are being developed for hackers to trick you into their games and just when you build your security back up - Wham, they are back at it with a new attack to your system. Breaching your secure data and putting a real test on your business’ cyber security.

With the increased dependence on technology and e-communications in the modern day, cybercriminals have realised how important and easy human interaction is to successfully breach one’s data network. With 99% of modern day cyber attacks requiring some form of human cooperation, businesses are leaving themselves vulnerable to an attack by not considering the most basic cyber safety risks.

There is a common misconception that a sophisticated cyber attack is the biggest threat to any organisation. That may see hackers trying to crack passwords and combinations for months at large. But fascinatingly enough, the biggest threat to your business actually is the people that work there. It is the responsibility of companies to educate their employees on cyber security and the best practices to minimise risk.

We’re wanting to highlight the risks to ensure companies are one step ahead of the game.

Statistics show that only 86 of Australia’s top 100 biggest companies only use a basic form of email protection. With a cyber security attack reported every 10 minutes nationwide it is obvious that further steps need to be implemented to protect your business from unwanted visitors.

Emails are a vital way of communicating both internally and externally in a business. They are also now the key channel hackers are honing in on to get the information they’re so desperately seeking.

Cue the activity of the day - Phishing.

Phishing is where the hacker will cast the bait often in the form of an email. Disguised as legitimate business but with one thing missing, the authority of the ‘brand’ they’re acting on behalf of. Placing a sneaky link or bot within the message for one to click, fill out the simplest form of information and boom. Hook line and sinker - they’ve got you.

The scary part is how authentic these emails and fake web-pages do look. What can you do to stop these? Nothing really. But there are preventative measures you can take to try and protect your business and your employees if they’re found in this situation.

Education is key. Constantly remind and upkeep cyber security knowledge throughout the workplace so all employees understand their role in protecting the businesses’ network.

Double check the email address, most authentic emails that come from legitimate businesses will be formatted similar to this help@comvergence.com.au. Whereas phishing emails may not look like that.

Install an anti-phishing toolbar whereby if you accidentally stumble across a malicious site the toolbar will alert you about it before fully accessing it.

Invest in a managed firewall, our team at Comvergence can help you there. Managed firewalls help protect sensitive data if there is a breach in your system. The Unified Threat Management consolidates multiple security and networking functions all on one appliance.

Trust your gut, if something doesn’t feel legit, you’re probably right. Most companies will contact you via phone if they really need to be in touch.

A breach can have a huge impact on your business. Make sure you stay ahead of the latest cyber security threats by contacting a security expert today. For more information don’t hesitate to reach out via the Comvergence website.
